This is the fourth consecutive year-on-year increase after those achieved in 2012 (+2.8%), 2011 (+6%) and 2010 (+2.3%) following three previous years of declines. Specifically, in 2009 the number of new companies created fell by 24.5%, in 2008 they fell by 27.8%, and in 2007 they fell by 3.9%.

 

22.5% of the companies created in 2013 related to trade and 18.9% to construction. With regard to company dissolutions, by main economic activity, 22.7% related to construction and 20.3% to trade.

 

Madrid and Catalonia were the regions to register most new companies created last year, with 19,657 and 17,708 companies, respectively, while La Rioja and Cantabria were the regions which registered the lowest numbers of new companies, with 410 and 798 companies, respectively.

 

With regard to the number of companies dissolved, the regions to register the greatest numbers of dissolutions were Madrid and Andalusia, with 5,617 and 3,679, respectively, while the regions to report the lowest numbers of companies dissolved were Navarra (181) and La Rioja (248).

 

6,986 new companies were created in December, representing an increase of 10.9% over the same month of 2012, and a return to positive year-on-year rates after the fall of 3.2% registered in November, a decline that ended seven consecutive months of increases.

 

In addition, El Economista reported that, in December 2013, 2,397 companies were dissolved, which is 3.3% less than in the same month of 2012. Of these, 73.4% were dissolved voluntarily, 9.9% were mergers and the remaining 16.7% were for other reasons.

 

Month-on-month (December over November), the creation of new companies fell by 5%, its lowest decline for this month in the past five years, while the number of businesses dissolved increased by 11.7%, registering the lowest increase in this month since 2009.
